For the most part, cats are cute and cuddly pets. They purr when they’re happy and follow their owners around from room to room. However, every cat has a bad side- a dark side if you will. When a cat turns its back on you and growls, it certainly is disconcerting. Many times, a cat that is about to attack or is in an aggressive frame of mind will exhibit several clear warning signs that signal impending doom for your foot or nose.

However, sometimes these signals can be subtle and easily missed by someone not familiar with cat behavior. It’s important to know what to look for so that everyone understands what this means when a feline does decide to cold toward you

In the wild, big cats growl to scare off predators and other creatures encroaching on their territory. This is exactly what your pet does when it growls at you. Cats are territorial animals that don’t like it when people or other pets invade their space. It’s very rare for a cat to attack out of nowhere. If they make the first move, it’s because they feel threatened in some way. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule- especially if illness or old age has taken its toll on your pet. Usually, though, the key to avoiding an aggressive outburst is not doing anything that makes your cat feel threatened or anxious.

Most often than not, growing can be attributed to one of two things:  Someone has inappropriately invaded your cat’s space. Your cat is sick or in pain and doesn’t want you to touch it.

All things aside, the only way to truly know if your cat is growling at you because it wants you to go away is by observing its body language and behavior. If your pet even appears as if it’s about to attack, leave the room immediately and don’t come back until it has calmed completely down.

If this happens again, consider having your cat checked out for illness or injury that may be causing discomfort. This should help end the aggression before the problem escalates into something more dangerous such as a scratch or bite.

When your cat feels threatened, she’ll usually try to get away from the source of discomfort. If you continue to pursue her, however, she may feel inclined to lash out at you (at least this is what it looks like). It’s best to leave the room and return only when she’s calmed down completely.

If you have a history of being attacked by your cat, tell her she’ll be allowed outside if she bites or scratches you as this should deter further outbursts.
