Ticks are parasites that feed on the blood of mammals, birds, and reptiles. Many ticks carry disease-causing organisms which they can transmit to the host animal through their bite. Ticks are known carriers of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, canine ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, tularemia , babesiosis among others. A tick bite is usually not painful for dogs because of their thick skin but there are cases when a dog can get very ill or even die from an infection caused by a tick bite. It is best to have your pet checked immediately if you suspect that he was bitten by a tick.
Tick identification is also very important to make sure you are using the right tick medication.
The main difference between a dog tick and a deer tick is that while the deer tick nymphs are very small (~1mm), dog ticks aren’t. Dog ticks can be identified by their shield which covers their head unlike other types of ticks. It is this specific characteristic that makes them harder to get rid of, since it takes time for the eggs to hatch and no longer have this particular feature.
In our case, we had been seeing some unexplained rashes on our pets’ skin so along with taking them to a dermatologist , I decided to check if they were bitten by a tick or any other bugs for that matter. We did find one on my German Shepherd but couldn’t tell if it was Deer Tick or just an ordinary Dog Tick. You can see here a picture of the tick we found on him:
We immediately went to our nearest 24 hour animal hospital and after a short check up, they told us that it was actually a Deer Tick and not a Dog Tick . They said that this type of tick is more dangerous because it carries Lyme disease which can affect his neurological system causing seizures (of course I don’t want any of these). The good news is that my dog is very healthy with no signs of any neurological disorders so far.
If you find an attached tick on your pet’s skin , make sure you properly remove it ASAP using tweezers or special tick removal tools like the one below (which is what our vet used):
A simple tug usually isn’t enough to remove the tick as it also injects some of its fluids into your dog’s skin which can cause a lot of complications. Be sure to clean the area with antiseptic soap and apply topical antibiotic cream afterwards.
It’s also a good idea to take a look at your furry friend’s skin every now and then. If you notice something unusual, make sure you consult your vet immediately. In our case, we were planning on going out of town for a couple weeks so we didn’t really bother checking their skin after getting back from that trip but this kind of thing should be done regularly even if there are no signs of abnormal lumps or rashes anywhere on their body
As always, prevention is better than cure and you can help your pets avoid ticks by using a tick preventive spot-on medication, preferably those that also repel mosquitos. These products will not only prevent ticks from attaching themselves to your pet but will also kill them before they can cause any harm. And as always, keep an eye out for anything unusual like:
rashes or lumps, loss of appetite, weight loss lethargy and much more because these could be signs of infection from a myriad of possible causes so don’t hesitate to bring your pet to the vet if you see any of these symptoms.
Fortunately, I would say that tick bites are very rare in dogs so please don’t panic if you happen to notice one on their skin. Just always keep an eye out for anything unusual because it could be a sign that something’s not right!
Can dogs die due to ticks?

Ticks are mainly found on the ears, head and neck so always take a good look at these areas when checking them for ticks. If you find one, make sure to properly remove it by using tweezers or tick removal tools . Sucking them out with your mouth could be dangerous because what if there’s more than one tick? If you’re not experienced enough in handling ticks, your pet’s vet should be able to do it for you.
How long can a dog live with a tick?
