Are limes bad for dogs? Are limes bad for dogs?

I found out that limes are bad for dogs, but I’ve also heard that they’re not. Is this true?

Answer: Limes are NOT toxic to dogs at all. A quick glance at the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center website shows no listing for lime or lime juice toxicity in dogs or cats, meaning it is unlikely to cause any kind of poisoning, toxic change, or other problem. There are many plants and foods which are toxic to pets including chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, artificial sweeteners (e.g., xylitol), alcohols (e.g., ethanol-containing mouthwashes), macadamia nuts*, and chewing gum that contains the sugar substitute xylitol.

*As a general rule, dogs should not eat any nut regardless of the type (almonds, pecans, walnuts, etc.). Macadamia nuts are only toxic to pets when they are raw and/or contain large amounts of macadamia seeds or shell material. Although many veterinarians recommend feeding dogs foods like beef and chicken bones as treats, this is not recommended because it can be very dangerous and cause injury (e.g., fractured teeth) or blockage in the intestinal tract.

What happens if my dog has lime juice?

No side effects are expected from having lime juice or lime fruit in your dog’s diet. You should, however, only give your dog orange and grapefruit juices in moderation due to the high acidity levels they can have on a dog’s digestive system. Note: make sure your dog doesn’t get access to other citrus fruits like lemons, limes, grapefruits, etc. because they are still acidic and can cause stomach problems if consumed in large enough amounts.
